System Software 6.0.4 is a revision of System Software 6.0.3 to support the Macintosh Portable and the Macintosh IIci. Both System Software and HyperCard versions are intended for users of the new Macintosh Portable and the IIci. The installed base does not have to upgrade to these releases. System Software versions 6.0.2, 6.0.3, and 6.0.4 will co-exist in networked environments. Users will need to upgrade to System Software 6.0.4 to use HyperCard 1.2.5. The NeXT computer version of Wingz will be distributed through Businessland. Wingz allows users to easily combine numbers, words, graphs, and graphic images on a single worksheet, and print to a single page. It weighs a whopping 15.7 pounds with battery and optional 40 Mb hard disk. Without the hard disk it still weighs 13.7 pounds. The Mac Portable features a Motorola CMOS 68000 microprocessor running at 16 megahertz. It comes standard with a full-size LCD display, 1 Mb of static RAM, one 1.4 Mb SuperDrive, eight external ports, one ROM expansion slot, and a 63- key keyboard with built-in trackball for cursor-control. The screen employs active matrix liquid crystal display technology that enables the portable to display the Mac graphical user interface, as well as graphics, text, and animation, with a fast response time, high contrast, and wide viewing angle. The screen is 50 percent larger than a Mac SE screen and has a resolution of 640 x 400 pixels. The portable uses lead acid batteries, good between charges for six to 12 hours, depending on use. Eight ports for external peripherals are available: external disk drive port, SCSI, Apple Desktop Bus, printer, modem, audio, power adapter, and video ports. The chassis is composed of rugged polycarbonate plastic, a material used for motorcycle helmets. The Mac Portable with 1 Mb of RAM and a SuperDrive retails for $5,799. It delivers up to a 55 percent performance increase over the Mac IIx and IIcx, according to Apple. The Mac IIci features a 25 MHz 68030 microprocessor and 68882 coprocessor. The combination of the 68030 microprocessor and 68882 floating-point coprocessor, running at 25 MHz, represents the most significant new feature of the Mac IIci. The system uses 80 nanosecond DRAM, and a RAM cache connector allows for a cache card to be installed to increase processing speed. The Mac IIci has 512K of ROM, which provides support for the new hardware features (built-in video, burst-mode RAM access, optional cache) and for 32-bit addressing. The burst-mode RAM access capability of the 68030 allows the processor to read blocks of memory more efficiently than in previous architectures. As a result, the system requires fewer clock cycles to process instructions, further accelerating the system's performance. The Mac IIci has the same hardware features, external ports, and small footprint as the Mac IIcx. The Mac IIci can be configured with 1 Mb to 8 Mb of RAM on the logic board and accommodate either a 40 Mb or 80 Mb 3.5-inch half-height hard disk drive.
